The ASCO Cancer Foundation supports educational programs of the highest quality in cancer care and prevention; facilitates the dissemination of information about cancer and cancer treatment to patients and their families; and, through its grants program, supports, encourages, and recognizes excellence in clinical research in the field of oncology.
The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity that raises and grants funds to help improve the prevention and treatment of cancer. One in three Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. By 2050, it is predicted that the number of cancer cases worldwide will grow to 27 million. Globally, cancer is a major killer. Members of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) are the pre-eminent cancer physicians in the world. They are the men and women who train for years and continue lifelong learning to improve cancer care and prevention – through research, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. The ASCO Cancer Foundation helps to build this critical cadre of medical professionals and supports them in their lifelong learning.
We also make trusted cancer information available directly to the public. There is no source of cancer information – for physicians or patients – that is more comprehensive, current and trusted than ASCO’s premier website Cancer.Net. All the information and content on Cancer.Net is developed and approved by the cancer doctors at ASCO, making Cancer.Net the most up-to-date and trusted resource for cancer information on the Internet. One of our goals at The ASCO Cancer Foundation is to make this information widely available and expand cancer literacy. We understand the power of knowledge. Our work extends that power to cancer doctors and patients around the world.
Through partnerships with private businesses, foundations, and individuals, The ASCO Cancer Foundation obtains vital support for programs that inspire ingenuity in research, invigorate new generations of oncologists, bring new treatments to greater numbers of patients, and advocate for programs and policies that improve the health-care environment for people living with cancer. We need YOUR support to continue this life-saving work.
Over the past 25 years, ASCO and The ASCO Cancer Foundation have funded the clinical research efforts of young investigators through our grants and awards programs. To date, more than 450 Young Investigator Awards (YIAs) and nearly 150 Career Development Awards (CDAs) have been awarded, totaling more than $35 million. In 2004, the Foundation established the Advanced Clinical Research Award (ACRA) to support the work of senior investigators in the field. Five ACRAs have been awarded since then, totaling $2,250,000 in research funding.
