IDEA Awards Enable Early-career, International Oncologists to Experience the ASCO Annual Meeting

The ASCO Cancer Foundation® International Development and Education Award (IDEA) program has provided 20 non-U.S. oncologists with the opportunity to travel to the 2009 ASCO Annual Meeting. Designed to improve global oncology care by providing support to early-career oncologists practicing in countries with limited resources, the program provides a monetary award that covers expenses associated with attending the Meeting. It includes complimentary Meeting registration and admission to a limited number of ticketed Meeting sessions. Eligible recipients also receive 3 years of complimentary ASCO membership, which includes a subscription to the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO).

The program allows participants who practice or conduct research outside of the United States to expand their current knowledge, earn continuing medical education (CME) credits, and share their learning experiences from the Meeting with colleagues in their home countries. Since its inception in 2002, the program has enabled 140 oncologists — representing 40 countries — to participate in the Meeting.

Award recipients are paired with a mentor from a team of volunteer ASCO leaders. Mentors help enhance the Meeting experience for recipients and provide advice about career development. After the Meeting has ended, each recipient is given the opportunity to spend several days visiting his or her mentor’s institution. This educational experience allows recipients to share new insights and research results with their colleagues and to facilitate changes and improvements to the practices and research infrastructures in their home countries.

New this year, recipients will participate in a special training session as part of the American Cancer Society University Program. Recipients will learn strategies for mobilizing patients for advocacy, working with non-government programs, and understanding cancer planning at a country level. Recipients also will participate in a workshop on dissemination strategies to learn techniques for becoming agents of change in their local oncology communities. Clement Adebamowo, MD, Chair of the IDEA Working Group and a past IDEA recipient, will lead this collaborative discussion.

The 2009 IDEA Program is supported through The ASCO Cancer Foundation, Roche, Millenium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Merck Serono, and Amgen. Strongest consideration for the awards was given to candidates who submitted an abstract for the 2009 Annual Meeting. Recipients were restricted to having fewer than 10 years of experience in the field of oncology and to a maximum of 1 year of “formal training” in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Australia, or New Zealand. Candidates also were restricted to having attended no more than one previous ASCO Annual Meeting.

The application period for the 2010 IDEA Program will open in October 2009. Questions can be submitted by sending an e-mail to idea@asco.org.
