Two ASCO members will receive nearly $1 million from The ASCO Foundation to pursue clinical and translational research in lung cancer. The 2007 Advanced Clinical Research Awards (ACRAs) will be presented to Eric Haura, MD, of H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, and Pierre Massion, MD, of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in recognition of their commitment to advancing progress against lung cancer and improving the treatment of patients with the disease.
Dr. Haura’s research will investigate a novel treatment regimen in patients with lung cancer, and Dr. Massion’s project will evaluate a new approach to the early detection of lung cancer. The recipients were chosen for their unique patient-oriented approaches to research; the significance, originality, and potential impact of their projects; the appropriateness and feasibility of their proposed research methods; and their prior research experience and accomplishments.
“These two awards will aid the discovery of important advances for one of the country’s deadliest cancers by providing financial support for promising lung cancer research,” says Allen S. Lichter, MD, Chief Executive Officer of The ASCO Foundation. “The ASCO Foundation is committed to supporting physicians by encouraging and funding their research initiatives.”
ACRAs are presented to physicians who have five to 10 years post-training experience, are full-time faculty members in a clinical setting at an academic medical center, and are ASCO Active members. Each winner will receive a three-year award totaling $450,000 to support clinical research in lung cancer. The awards will be presented during the 2007 ASCO Annual Meeting and are supported by Genentech BioOncology™.
