ASCO Grant Applications Now Available to State Affiliates
Applications are now available for ASCO State Affiliate Grants—funds of up to $10,000 are being offered to develop new programs and projects or to enhance existing activities on the state and regional level. The application deadline for the grant program is December 9, 2008.
The grants are intended to help ASCO’s Affiliates conduct or participate in activities that will have an overall benefit to their society’s members, ASCO members, other state societies, or the general oncology community. They are also designed to help Affiliates take advantage of resources not available on the local level.
ASCO’s State Affiliate Grant Program demonstrates ASCO’s commitment to raising funds for its 47 Affiliates.
Previous grant recipients have used funding to develop mentorship programs for fellows, create emergency preparedness programs, establish state clinical trials networks, collaborate with patient advocacy groups, and conduct educational meetings to reinvigorate their society. The State Affiliate Working Group, the grant awarding body, encourages Affiliates to be creative, but also realistic when applying for grant monies. Additional information about past grant recipients can be found at www.asco.org/stateaffiliates.
Funds obtained through the ASCO State Affiliate Grant Program should not be used for general operating costs of the state society. Grants will not be provided for Affiliates to carry out lobbying activities, including meetings with state and federal legislators, administrative officials, or their staff. However, an Affiliate may seek support to sponsor an educational conference that provides instruction about general advocacy skills and grassroots training.
Applications must be submitted by the President or Administrator/Executive Director of the society, and must illustrate the society leadership’s commitment to carrying out the proposed activity. The State Affiliate Working Group will give equal weight to each of the following criterion when evaluating applications:
Demonstrated need for the proposed activity
Potential for the activity to enhance the society’s skill set
Benefit to other Affiliates and/or the oncology community
Adequacy of the Affiliates’ resources to carry out the project
Grants are intended to support one year projects. Any application submitted for a multi-year project must demonstrate the society’s ability to fund the project in subsequent years. Additional details include:
Grants will be disbursed no later than March 27, 2009
The grant period will begin April 1, 2009, and conclude April 1, 2010
Funds will be directed to the state society, not the individual
