An advance directive is a legally binding set of instructions that explain the kind of medical treatment you want and do not want if you become unable to make those decisions for yourself. In most states, an advance directive can be oral (spoken), but an advance directive is less likely to be challenged if it is in writing.
For more information about who can make advance directives, the various types of advance directives, and other aspects of advance directives, read Cancer.Net Feature: Understanding Advance Directives.
